OPA Outboard Motor Boat Mechanics
Whether your boat is large or small, you’ll need to have its engine serviced from time to time. Every boat needs to be properly maintained, and that’s especially true of boats that have engines. OPA also offer outboard motor pre purchase inspections.
While you’ll be able to handle some of this maintenance work on your own, there’s only so much that you’ll be able to do. In some cases, you’ll have to have your boat serviced by a professional.
If you need boat engine servicing, here are a few things that you should try.
Do Some Troubleshooting
Before you take your boat in to be looked at, you should do a little bit of troubleshooting. See if you can diagnose the problem yourself.
Sometimes, minor issues can cause big problems. If you grab the manual for your boat, you should find a troubleshooting section. Go through the section and see if you can diagnose the problem. Do what you can to get your engine fixed.
Finding Someone To Service Your Boat
If your boat does needs to be serviced make sure you take it to the right person. A boat is a valuable possession, and your boat deserves the highest possible level of care.
If you have friends that own boats, you may want to ask them who they take their boats to you. See if they can provide you with a recommendation. Look into anyone that they suggest to you.
You can also find out a lot more about your options online. If there are companies or people that service boats in your area, it’s likely that people have taken the time to review them.
Start putting together a list of places that you could take your boat. Once you’re satisfied with your list, you can gather more information about each of the candidates.
Make Phone Calls
Pick up your phone and reach out to each place on your list. Explain the issues that you have been having, and find out if they would be able to fix your boat for you.
When you have the company on the phone, you should try to get a few questions answered. First, you should check to see what they think the problem is. While most people won’t be able to provide you with a firm diagnosis over the phone, they should be able to suggest a few possibilities.
From there, you should find out when they will be able to look at your boat. How long will you have to wait if you want to have your boat taken care of?
Lastly, you should ask for a price estimate. While quotes you receive over the phone usually aren’t binding, they can be a useful guide.
If you’re calling several different companies, you should take some notes while you have these companies on the phone. That way, you’ll be able to remember the things that they told you.
Decide Who To Take Your Boat To
Once you’ve done your research and talked to people at different places, you can decide who you want to take your boat to. If possible, you should take your boat in sooner rather than later. If you wait too long, the problem could get worse.
When you take your boat in, read over any paperwork that you are given. Don’t sign something that you haven’t read. You don’t want to be hit with any unexpected charges.
In most cases, you’ll have to leave your boat with the person that is providing your boat engine servicing. If the problem can’t be resolved quickly, they’re going to have to spend some time looking at your boat.
Taking your boat in for servicing can be similar to taking your car to a mechanic. If you are familiar with that process, then you should know what to expect from this process.
Get Things In Writing
If the company that is servicing your boat engine is doing additional work on your boat, you should try to get things in writing. Ask them to provide you with a piece of paper that lists the work that is going to be done and the price that you will be charged.
If you have things in writing, it will be difficult for the company to charge you more later on. They won’t be able to change the price without getting your approval. They’ll be locked in to what they agreed to.
Get A Warranty
If possible, you should work with someone that offers a guarantee on the work that they do. That way, if you have problems with your boat’s engine in the future, you will be able to take the boat back to them.
If you are going to be spending a lot of time on the water, you need to make sure that your boat’s engine is going to work the way that is supposed to. A company that is willing to stand by their work will make sure your engine is working the way it should be.
While you should spend time caring for your boat, there are times when you will need boat engine servicing from a professional. When you are in a situation like this, you should know who you should take your boat to.
Research your options and find the best possible candidate. Give your boat the best care that you can afford. Taking your boat to the right person can increase your boat’s lifespan.
